Sodomy + Saudi = 7,000 Lashes

Ouch! Note to self…(just kidding). I find the headline (as reported in the Daily Star) a little misleading…anyone who knows Saudis knows that participating in sodomy does not mean you are gay…it just means you are Saudi. All joking aside, I feel bad for these guys – 7,000 is a lot. It could be worse though…they could be Iranian.

Oh, quick story about that. A western friend of mine in Yemen was talking to her Arabic teacher while walking through Midan Tahrir. They were discussing homosexuality in Yemen, and her teacher made a A-Jad-esque comment about there being no gays in Yemen. Hearing this, she pointed to one of the male prostitutes that hang out near the square and said “what about him…he’s gay.” To which the teacher replied “Oh, Catharine! He’s not gay…He’s working!” – Priceless.

RIYADH: Two men in Saudi Arabia have been sentenced to 7,000 lashes each after being convicted of sodomy and have received their first round of punishment in public, a newspaper said Thursday. The men, who were not identified, were meted out an unspecified number of lashes in public in the southwestern city of Al-Bahah on Tuesday evening, Al-Okaz daily reported. They were then returned to prison where they are to be held until the full punishment is completed, the newspaper added, without saying how many sessions this would involve. Homosexual acts are illegal in Saudi Arabia, which metes out strict punishment based on Shariah, or Islamic law.
